The future your legacy can build

The future is reflected in the eyes of a young child who will benefit from a donor's legacy gift to Habitat for Humanity Edmonton

When Lyndsay first stepped into her Habitat home, she realized she felt something unfamiliar: peace of mind. “The biggest difference overall is that general sense of security,” she said. “Just knowing that it’s ours and we make all the decisions – it’s been really comforting for our family.” Before homeownership, Lyndsay and her children faced the uncertainty of unsafe and unaffordable rentals. They moved often, carried constant stress, and longed for stability. Today, their home is more than just a roof – it’s the foundation for a hopeful future. How Legacy Giving Builds Futures Stories like Lyndsay’s are made possible because people choose to act on their belief that everyone deserves safe a home of their own. Some make that commitment through volunteering or donating. Others make the decision to carry their values forward through legacy giving. A legacy gift is a donation left in your will or estate plan. It could be a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or an asset such as property or investments. Whatever the form, it ensures Albertans like Lyndsay’s will continue to experience the stability of homeownership for generations to come. Research confirms the ripple effects. Habitat homeowners report better mental health, stronger finances and brighter educational outcomes for their children. On average, household incomes rise by $7,525 per year – three times higher than if they had continued renting. Your Legacy, Their Tomorrow A legacy gift is more than the financial benefit — it’s sharing your values – social equity, compassion and hope for the future. By making affordable homeownership part of your legacy, you’re giving more families the same chance Lyndsay’s family has today: to grow, to thrive and to dream. Together, we build a better future. A practical guide: How to include Habitat in your will

A father and son discuss leaving a legacy in their wills to Habitat for Humanity Edmonton

Leaving a legacy gift is one of the most meaningful ways to ensure hard-working families and individuals in our community can create long-term stability through homeownership. While it may sound complicated, including Habitat in your will is usually straightforward. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide: Step 1: Reflect on your values. Think about the impact you want your legacy to have. If you believe that homeownership is the key to creating lasting stability for Albertans, a gift in your will to Habitat can make that vision a reality. Step 2: Decide what kind of gift works best for you. Legacy gifts can take many forms: Step 3: Talk with your family. Legacy giving doesn’t replace caring for loved ones – it comes after. Have an open conversation with family members so they understand your wishes and values. Step 4: Meet with your lawyer or advisor. A professional can help you add Habitat to your will with a short clause. It’s not expensive or difficult, and you can update it anytime as your life changes. Step 5: Let us know. If you choose to leave a gift to Habitat, we’d love to thank you and ensure your wishes are clear. While it isn’t legally required to tell us, it helps us honour your intentions and include you in our community of legacy donors. Legacy Giving is more than a legal step – it’s hope for a better future. Together, we build homes, communities, and hope. Learn more at hfh.org/legacy

The 5 most important questions about legacy giving answered

Legacy Giving with Habitat for Humanity builds communities

We’re often asked about legacy giving — what it is, how it works, and who it’s for. Here are five of the most important questions answered: 1. What is legacy giving? Legacy giving means leaving a gift in your will or estate plan. It could be money, property, investments or other assets. 2. Do I have to be wealthy? Not at all. Legacy giving is about values, not wealth. Every gift, large or small, makes a difference. Even 1% of your estate will meaningfully support affordable homeownership in our community. 3. Will my family be taken care of first? Yes. Your loved ones always come first. A legacy gift comes after those commitments are met. 4. How will my gift be used? Legacy gifts support us to build safe, affordable homes and stronger communities. Legacies provide long-term stability so we can plan ahead and serve more Albertans for years to come. 5. Is it complicated to set up? Not usually. Adding a clause to your will with the help of a lawyer or advisor can be simple and straightforward. And you can update it anytime as life changes. Legacy giving is more than generosity — it’s a statement of hope for the future. By making Habitat part of your legacy, you help ensure that families and individuals for generations to come can thrive through homeownership. Learn more at hfh.org/legacy

Honouring the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

Today, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton teams from across Edmonton and the surrounding communities came together at our offices and ReStores, wearing orange to stand in solidarity on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day invites us to pause and reflect. At Habitat, we believe in the power of a home — not only as a place of shelter, but as a foundation for stability, belonging, and community. For many Indigenous Peoples, however, the meaning of home is deeply connected to the legacy of residential schools. That history carries both loss and resilience, and it is one we must not overlook. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to listen, to remember, and to honour the stories of survivors and their families. It is about acknowledging the truths of the past so that we can commit to doing better now and in the future. When we speak about home, we hold that word with care — knowing it carries a deeper meaning for Indigenous Peoples whose experiences have shaped their understanding of home in ways that are often painful, but also filled with remarkable strength. As we wore orange today, we did so not as a single gesture, but as part of an ongoing journey of respect and solidarity. Reconciliation is not the work of one day; it is the work of every day.

Legacy Giving: How your story can build futures

August 20, 2025 Legacy giving is one of the most powerful ways to ensure that we continue building homes, communities, and hope for years to come. What is legacy giving? Legacy giving – a gift in your will – is a way to create lasting impact by including Habitat in your estate plans. It could be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or even assets like investments, property or insurance. Whatever form it takes, a legacy gift ensures that families you may never meet will have the opportunity to build stability through affordable homeownership. Why it matters Legacy giving is about more than generosity — it’s about values. By making us part of your legacy, you’re carrying forward your belief that homeownership should be a right and not a privilege. A national study by Deloitte confirmed the ripple effects of affordable homeownership: individuals and families in Habitat homes report improved health, stronger finances, and brighter educational futures for their children. A legacy gift means more of those stories can continue, generation after generation. Accessible for everyone Contrary to common myths, legacy giving isn’t just for seniors or the wealthy. Anyone can make a difference, and every gift matters. It doesn’t take away from caring for your family first — it simply allows you to extend your impact beyond your lifetime. A gift that keeps building Legacy gifts provide us with the stability to plan ahead, invest in future builds, and serve more hardworking Albertans who need the opportunity to build their futures. They are a promise that together, we build homes, communities, and hope — today, tomorrow, and for years to come. Get started Planning today can change lives tomorrow. See how your legacy can make homes possible. We will guide you through the entire process.

Mother’s Day Makeover: a ReStore collaboration!

Every year, Sharleen Thomas from Where My Love Grows selects one incredible woman in Leduc County for a heartfelt tradition: a Mother’s Day Makeover. It is a way to celebrate and uplift a local mom, mom-to-be, or bonus mom with a surprise home transformation. This year, we were honoured to join in and support her efforts! We provided Sharleen with ReStore gift certificates to help her source furniture, décor, and materials for the makeover. With ReStore locations across the Edmonton area, she was able to shop for affordable finds that just needed a little love to shine. Meet Leanne Wurban, the 2025 Makeover Recipient Leanne’s story is one of unwavering resilience. She and her husband Derek spent years searching for the perfect acreage, raising their daughter Hailey and working hard to build a life they loved. But a surgery in 2021 changed Leanne’s ability to work, and what followed was a string of medical and personal challenges that would test even the strongest among us. Hailey, born in 2016, faced her own health journey early on, including surgery for a tumour at age three. Then, in what should have been a joyful 2023 celebrating a new baby on the way and their tenth wedding anniversary, disaster struck. A severe hailstorm damaged their home, car, and trailer. Soon after, a burst pipe flooded their house just as Leanne entered her third trimester. Forced to leave, the family spent more than a year living in a small trailer on their property. In the middle of winter. With a newborn. Frozen water lines, construction delays, propane shortages, and multiple health setbacks did not break her spirit. Through it all, Leanne kept showing up for her family. She is the kind of person who holds everything together, even when everything feels like it is falling apart. In February, they finally returned to their home. But Leanne’s biggest wish was simple: a space where her daughter could finally invite friends over. A home that felt safe, warm, and welcoming again. Bringing It All Together Using ReStore finds and a lot of heart, Sharleen gave Leanne’s space a much-deserved refresh. Items that might have otherwise been overlooked were repurposed into something beautiful, showing that you do not need a big budget to create a space full of warmth, personality, and comfort. We are proud to have played a small role in this project, and we are grateful for people like Sharleen who use their talents to give back in such meaningful ways. Volunteer Spotlight: Reno Laseur

When someone gives generously of their time and energy for decades, recognition feels more than deserved — it feels necessary. Reno Laseur, a long-time volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Edmonton, was recently awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal — an honour given to Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities. Reno is one of just three Habitat Edmonton volunteers to receive this award. Since 2003, Reno has been involved with Habitat, first in Calgary and later in Edmonton, where he became a fixture on the Carter Place build and at multiple ReStore locations. He’s known for his reliability, kindness, and practical know-how — and for always being ready to lend a hand, whether it’s helping customers troubleshoot a power tool or constructing new shelving displays at a store. We asked Reno to answer a few questions to help more people get to know the man behind the medal. True to form, he took the time to answer each one in his own words. What do you currently do when volunteering with us?I volunteer at the Restore inspecting and testing all manner of appliances, lights, and tools. I have also recently helped building shelves and slot wall displays at Sherwood Park, South and Leduc stores. What is your history of volunteering with Habitat? In 2019 I moved to Edmonton and had the opportunity to help complete the houses at Habitat Carter Place, and met a lot of very dedicated volunteers and very enthusiastic new homeowners. When that project ended, I started volunteering at the Restores and truly found my passion helping customers discover affordable solutions. What’s your favourite memory of volunteering with us?At Carter Place we were tasked with building the retaining walls around the playground and filling them with sand. The kids were all lined up on the sidewalk watching us and repeatedly asking when the playground would be ready. About one week later, we had the grand opening of the playground and it was a special moment as the kids streamed onto the equipment. Why do you volunteer at Habitat?I have always admired Habitat’s great reputation for helping people. When did you start volunteering with Habitat? In 2003, while living in Calgary, the company I worked for sponsored annual team builds that I really enjoyed. Describe the values that guide your decision to where you volunteer your time.I have a need to be both challenged and physically active. The fine people at Habitat always make me feel welcome and appreciated. For me, this is a winning combination. What impact do you believe that Habitat is having on our community? How so?In talking with our new homeowners there is no doubt in my mind that we are helping make a significant change to their family circumstances and enabling them to also become a vital part of our community. What impact do you believe your volunteering is having on Habitat? When I started volunteering at the Habitat Restores, Hank Fast took the time to explain their history and how important they are to our future fundraising efforts, so that we can build more homes. I try to lead by his example and make helpful suggestions on how the Restore could be doing better. What factors are important to you about a charity or cause you choose to support?Charities that want to give a hand up promoting independence. What do you wish others knew about Habitat? There are many ways to be involved depending on your skills and interests. I encourage volunteers to give Habitat a try. I know they will enjoy it. Do you have a story you’d like to share? While volunteering on my first build, I met a retired gentleman who obviously loved volunteering with Habitat. When I asked why, he told me because he was able to meet some of the most interesting and charitable people in the community. I decided that very day that when I retired, I wanted to be just like him. What’s your favourite part of volunteering?I really enjoy helping our new homeowners with advice on how they can make repairs and improvements to their homes. What do you do in your spare time?I enjoy learning to play the drums, pace-walking, playing chess, making sourdough bread, self-managing my retirement investments, undertaking home improvements, and visiting with family and friends. Anything else? This is the second medal I have received for my volunteer work. In 2018 I was honoured with the Governor-General Sovereign Medal for helping the Fort McMurray Heritage Village rebuild after a devastating flood. If you are ever in the area, it is quite a jewel. If you’re inspired by Reno’s story and want to learn more about volunteering with Habitat, visit our Volunteer page!

McNally Student Build featured on CBC

We’re thrilled to share that CBC recently featured our McNally High School Student Build — a project that’s been close to our hearts and a big hit on social media. Through this program, students at McNally High School are learning valuable hands-on skills by building sheds for Habitat Edmonton’s ReStores. Not only does this give students practical experience in the trades, but it also supports our mission to make affordable homeownership possible. Each shed sold helps fund our work across the region. Watch the CBC story here: CBC Video – McNally Student Build We’re so grateful to McNally High School, West Fraser, and ACSA for helping bring this incredible initiative to life. If you’re interested in purchasing one of the student-built sheds, stop by your nearest Habitat ReStore and ask us what’s available!

Celebrating our volunteer program with Servus Credit Union

As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the power of community — and to thank the people who make our mission possible. At Habitat, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s moving donations at ReStore, supporting special events, or lending a hand in the office, our volunteers show up with a drive to make change happen. We couldn’t do this work without them. That’s why we’re beyond grateful to have Servus Credit Union as the proud sponsor of our volunteer program. Since 2023, Servus has shown a true commitment to giving back — not just in words, but in action. Their support has helped us create a more welcoming, rewarding, and empowering experience for every volunteer who walks through our doors. It’s more than a partnership. It’s a shared belief that strong communities are built on generosity, connection, and the simple act of showing up for others. Servus Credit Union continues to lead by example — and their investment in our volunteer program ensures that hundreds of Albertans can find purpose and belonging while helping build a better future for others. So here’s to our volunteers: your time, your energy, and your heart make all the difference. And here’s to Servus: thank you for standing beside us as we work to make home possible. We’re lucky to have you in our corner.

New Habitat Canada study: Results show the power of affordable homeownership

At Habitat Edmonton, we’ve seen firsthand how safe and stable housing can change lives. Now, a new nationwide study from Habitat for Humanity Canada, conducted in partnership with Deloitte, confirms just how far those benefits reach — beyond the front door, and deep into our communities and the Canadian economy. The 2025 report, Building Homes, Communities and Hope, explores the social and economic effects of Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership Program. More than 600 Habitat homeowners across Canada shared their experiences in a comprehensive survey — and the results are remarkable. Key findings include: These outcomes validate what we’ve long known: affordable homeownership is transformative. It creates the stability that allows individuals to pursue education, improve their health, earn better incomes, and participate more fully in their communities. If you’re looking for a way to support long-term solutions to Canada’s housing crisis, this study makes it clear — investing in affordable homeownership delivers real, measurable results.

New Habitat homeowners celebrated in St. Albert

ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA – Habitat for Humanity Edmonton welcomed new homeowners during a Home Celebration Ceremony held in St. Albert, marking the completion of four affordable homes built through a multi-partner collaboration. The homes were constructed in partnership with community developer Averton and brought to life through the combined support of all levels of government. The Government of Alberta contributed $100,000 per home, while the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) provided $125,000 per home — together totalling $900,000 in funding. The City of St. Albert also played a key role, contributing $100,000 to help make the project possible. “Alberta’s government has been pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity over the years, and this project is yet another example of the great work that they do,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “Habitat for Humanity is making a real difference by helping get homes built in our communities.” Averton served as the builder on the project, assisting in the development of the homes located in St. Albert’s Midtown community. “Every home represents improved living conditions and greater financial stability for the new homeowners,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “We appreciate the contributions from our government and community partners that helped make these homes a reality.” New homeowner Irene Abatangana spoke during the event, highlighting what the moment meant to her and her family. “I look around and see more than walls and windows,” said Abatangana. “I see the start of everything we’ve dreamed of. Most of all, this home gives us peace. It gives us stability. And it gives us the courage to look ahead.” St. Albert City Councillor Mike Killick attended the ceremony and noted the importance of partnerships in addressing housing needs. “We are proud to welcome these four families to St. Albert,” said Killick. “The City is pleased to support efforts that improve access to affordable housing and appreciates the collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, Averton, and both the provincial and federal governments.” Averton President and CEO Paul Lanni also shared remarks during the event. “Averton is pleased to support the development of these new homes,” said Lanni. “We value the opportunity to work alongside Habitat for Humanity Edmonton in helping more people establish roots in the Midtown community.” These homes are part of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton’s broader efforts to expand access to affordable homeownership across northern Alberta. In Sherwood Park, three homes are currently under construction in partnership with Qualico and Pacesetter Homes. In Leduc, construction is set to begin soon on a four-storey condo building, with four of the units designated for Habitat homeowners. That project is being developed in partnership with TLA Developments. As with all Habitat homes, homeowners purchase their homes through a unique, affordable mortgage model: no cash down payment is required, and mortgage payments are based on just 50% of the home’s appraised fair market value. – 30 – About Habitat for Humanity Edmonton Habitat for Humanity Edmonton brings communities together to help build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. Article: Edmonton charities caught up in Canada-U.S. tariff war brace for impacts on clients At Habitat Edmonton, we know that a stable home is more than just a place to live — it’s a foundation for a better future. But as costs continue to rise, the path to homeownership is becoming increasingly difficult for many families and individuals in our community. Recently, our Board Vice Chair, Andy England, had the opportunity to speak with CBC Edmonton about the challenges that charities like ours are facing. The need for affordable housing has never been greater, and we see it firsthand every day — people working hard to get ahead, but struggling to find a home they can afford. The Growing Challenge The rising cost of living impacts everyone, but it’s particularly hard on those trying to break out of the cycle of unaffordable rent and housing insecurity. When housing becomes out of reach, families are forced to make impossible choices between paying for shelter, food, or other essentials. At Habitat Edmonton, we are committed to keeping homeownership accessible. Through our homeownership program, we work with Albertans to provide an opportunity for long-term housing stability. Homeownership doesn’t just provide a roof over someone’s head — it offers security, a sense of belonging, and the ability to plan for the future. How You Can Help The need for affordable housing continues to grow, and we can’t do this work alone. Whether it’s through donating, volunteering, or shopping at ReStore, every action helps make homeownership possible for those who need it most. If you’d like to learn more about the challenges charities are facing, check out the full CBC article here. Together, we can continue making homeownership possible. Thank you for being part of this mission.

Building dreams in St. Albert

Excitement filled the air on February 27 as three future homeowners stepped inside their nearly completed homes in Midtown, St. Albert, for the first time. With construction nearing completion, they had the opportunity to walk through the spaces where they will soon build their lives and choose the unit that will become their home. The Midtown build is made possible through a partnership with Averton, bringing expertly designed, thoughtfully crafted homes to future Habitat homeowners. These homes offer functional living with three bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms with spaces designed for families to thrive. For these families, homeownership has felt out of reach. But thanks to the Black Families Funding Initiative, the dream of owning a home is becoming a reality. This funding was established by the government and CMHC in response to research showing that homeownership rates are not equal across Canada. While over 68% of Canadians own their own home, only 40% of Black Canadians do — the lowest homeownership rate among any group. One future homeowner shared their gratitude: “We are happy to be here! It’s very hard to own a home right now, and we feel so grateful for this program and to the people that have made this possible. We hope [Habitat prevails] and more people can have an opportunity just like us. We can’t wait to finally be in our home!” The walkthrough marked a significant milestone in their journey to homeownership. From the single mother raising three kids to the two couples who will soon move in, these families are taking an important step toward stability and self-reliance. Their joy and anticipation were clear as they toured the homes, picturing the future they will build within these walls. With just a little more work left before the keys are handed over, we are thrilled to be so close to completing these homes. We will continue to keep you updated as these families move closer to move-in day.

Donating to charity in your Will: the why and the how

Habitat Edmonton is a partner in Will Power, a national awareness campaign that encourages Canadians to use their Wills as a force for good. Together with Will Power, we want connect people like you with resources to make the best decisions for their family, their future finances, and the causes that matter to them! Did you know that, as part of your Will, you can set aside money for charity? You may have heard this called planned or legacy giving. And you’ll probably hear a lot more about it in the coming years: a Will Power study found a significant increase (5% to 8%) in the number of Canadians donating to charity in their Wills. In real numbers, that’s 1.2 million more Canadians giving in their Wills, creating roughly $37 billion in future donations. Imagine the difference $37 billion could make… Think about the incredible strides we could take toward solving the affordable homeownership crisis. Why the surge in Will-based charitable donations? One obvious reason is an economy forcing us all to hold our wallets a little (or a lot) tighter. Donating in your Will lets you make a big difference without using the money you need now. Even 1% in your Will could make quite the impact. This, coupled with an urgency to do something in the face of growing global need, has made gifts in Wills a popular solution. Inflation and cost of living may have put pressure on Canadian incomes. But the desire to help has never been stronger. Here’s a way for people to drive the kind of change they want, and it’s well within their reach. Another reason is demographics. Roughly a trillion dollars will be passed down over the next 10 years, the biggest wealth transfer in history. It’s given many of us pause, realizing we probably will have enough to support family AND a charity in our Wills. Lastly, Canadians are just getting more savvy with their money. This includes harnessing the power of Wills, RRSPs and other assets to give more strategically. More on that later… Why donate to charity in your Will? It might sound funny to think of your Will as a tool for change in this world, but when it comes down to it, there are many benefits to donating this way: Contribute more than you could otherwise. Our donors are always amazed when we tell them how far their donations stretch, and how much more we can do for affordable homeownership with every extra dollar. When we show them what a small percentage in their Will to Habitat Edmonton could look like, they do the math and their eyes light up. Remember, that the value of your “estate” is the sum of any property and/or business you own, your pension and/or registered funds, any securities like stocks or mutual funds, any cash savings, and life insurance. It adds up, even if you subtract debt. In fact, the average Canadian family in 2023 had a net worth of $981,816. If you put just 1% of that aside for charity, you’d be looking at a donation of about $10,000! When else could the average Canadian make such an extraordinary impact? Continue the good work you’ve done. When a donor tells us they’ve left a gift in their Will, we often get into the “why”. Most speak about their work with Habitat Edmonton as an expression of their values; something that provides them purpose, pride or enjoyment. They see their contributions of time and money as an investment in affordable homeownership.  So it only makes sense that they’d want their good work to continue on after they’re gone. Not just to keep their investment going, but also to show leadership and motivate others to get involved.      Keep your memory alive in a unique way. Imagine the pride your children or grandchildren will feel knowing that your legacy has provided a home — a foundation of strength, stability, and self-reliance — for Albertans for years to come. Picture the honour it would bring them to play a role in building new affordable homes within our community, continuing the values you hold dear. And remember, your gift doesn’t have to be monumental to make a lasting difference; even small gestures can create ripples of opportunity for generations to come. When your loved ones have something tangible, meaningful, and bigger than you to associate with your memory, you will have created a legacy that future generations can rally around. Tax breaks. Big ones. Taxes probably aren’t the first thing you think about when it comes to charity. But Canada actually has some of the most generous charitable tax incentives in the world! In Canada, when you make a donation, you get a charitable tax credit that can go a long way to help pay down what you owe. Your loved ones might need that charitable tax credit when you pass, because your estate is likely to be hit with a huge tax bill they’ll have to take care of. You can even structure your donation in different ways so that you get the biggest tax break possible. A popular approach is to name a charity as a beneficiary of your RRSP, because the credit received will close to cancel out what would be owed on this heavily taxed asset. If you’re interested to learn more, you can always book a consultation with a financial advisor who specializes in charitable giving. How to write a Will that includes a charity It’s easier than you think. In fact, it can actually be fun to dream about the future and give shape to the mark you will make… FAQs When donors find out about the option to leave part of their will to us, they almost all have follow-up questions. These (or variants on these) come up a lot. What about my family? I want to leave everything to them. It’s possible to support both family and charity in your Will. Think about your Will in terms

Building Independence: Narayan and Supriya’s story

Almost a year ago, Narayan and his wife, Supriya, were renting a small apartment in Edmonton. Their son, Keyange, who uses a wheelchair for mobility, struggled in the cramped space. Unable to navigate the apartment comfortably, he often grew frustrated, which led to frequent noise complaints from neighbors. The family longed for a home where their son could have the space he needed.  Narayan knew their challenges would only grow as Keyange got older and required more room to move and play. The narrow staircase leading to their apartment was already a significant concern, and the landlord offered no solutions. Although Narayan dreamed of owning a home, his single income and the high costs of down payments and mortgages made homeownership feel out of reach. Determined to find a better living situation, he began exploring options to buy a home and discovered Habitat Edmonton’s affordable homeownership program. Intrigued, he researched further and realized this could be the opportunity they needed. Without hesitation, he submitted an application and held onto hope. A month of anxious waiting turned into celebration when Narayan received an email approving their application.  Moving day was hectic, but Narayan and Supriya were filled with excitement. Their dream of homeownership had finally become a reality. They wasted no time making the house their own, filling it with plants and diving into gardening.  Their home, nestled in quiet Fort Saskatchewan, is part of a new community. Narayan’s commute to work is now much shorter, and the spacious basement provides plenty of room for Keyange to play. He moves through their home effortlessly, fostering both his independence and growing confidence. For Narayan and Supriya, it’s more than just a house—it’s a source of peace of mind, knowing that every monthly payment is an investment in their family’s future.  Narayan says that owning a home is a different level of happiness, and he encouraged anyone interested in homeownership to apply for Habitat’s program. If you’d like to own a home like Narayan and Supriya, learn more here.

Volunteering With a Heart: Calvin’s ReStore Journey

When Calvin first arrived in Canada, he struggled to meet new friends and gain work experience. His search for opportunities to build skills and interact with his community led him to ReStore, where he began volunteering in January 2024. Although he started at our North location, he quickly noticed the need for support at ReStore West and volunteered to split his time between the two. Since then, Calvin has become an invaluable member of our team. Although he always helps out in any way he can, Calvin particularly enjoys assisting customers. With a warm greeting and a friendly smile, he helps customers find the items they are searching for. He also supports loading and unloading donations, pricing and packaging items, and maintaining store cleanliness and safety. Calvin enjoys volunteering at ReStore because he likes to give back to his community. He shares Habitat Edmonton’s values of supporting families in need and feels proud to contribute to an organization that makes such a positive impact. ReStore has also taught him a number of skills in retail work and warehouse management, increasing his confidence and independence.  What Calvin loves most about volunteering at ReStore is the sense of community he’s found. Other volunteers, homeowners, and staff at ReStore have all been kind and supportive, leaving a lasting impression on him. Their support was especially meaningful when Calvin faced a personal loss, and the entire ReStore team offered hugs, encouragement, and support. Next time you stop by ReStore North or West, keep an eye out for Calvin. His bright smile and friendliness is hard to miss! If you’d like to volunteer at ReStore like Calvin, learn more here.

Honouring the legacy of President Jimmy Carter (1924 – 2024)

We are mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a man whose legacy of public service, unwavering commitment to human rights, and enduring compassion for those less fortunate have inspired generations. His life’s work stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the impact one person can have in changing the world for the better. On behalf of our staff, volunteers, and the countless families touched by his work, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family. The 2017 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project In 2017, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton was honoured to host Habitat for Humanity’s 34th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. This monumental event brought together thousands of volunteers from across the globe, including President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, to help build affordable homes alongside future Habitat homeowners. The incredible collaboration resulted in the construction of 58 Habitat homes in Edmonton — now known as Carter Place — 16 homes in Fort Saskatchewan, and the donation of 1 home. Carter Place has since grown into a thriving neighbourhood, serving families and individuals with strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. This community also continues to embody President Carter’s vision through Habitat Edmonton’s BuyBack Program, ensuring homes remain accessible to future generations. President Carter’s hands-on approach during the 2017 build — despite his advanced age — was a testament to his lifelong commitment to making a difference. His presence on the build site were both humbling and inspiring, reminding us all of the power of collective action. Memorial Doors: A Tribute to President Carter’s Legacy As we join Habitat for Humanity organizations worldwide in mourning this profound loss, we are also celebrating President Carter’s incredible legacy. To honour his memory and acknowledge the doors he opened to brighter futures for thousands of Habitat homeowners, Habitat Edmonton is proud to participate in a global tribute. We are erecting four memorial doors, symbolizing the opportunities President Carter created through his nearly four decades of advocacy for affordable housing. These doors will be displayed at each of our four Edmonton area ReStore locations: The media and general public are invited to visit any of these locations to pay tribute to President Carter by signing the memorial doors with their names and personal messages. These doors will serve as enduring symbols of his vision, proudly displayed in our ReStores as a reminder of the countless lives transformed by his work.

A Home of her own: Liyu’s homeownership journey

As Liyu sat in her apartment in the spring of 2024, she looked around her surroundings with frustration. Her daughter, Lidet, sat at her desk in the corner of the living room completing her homework, while her son, Meba, tried to navigate the cramped kitchen. Although a small greenspace sat behind the apartment, Liyu knew that her second son, Robel, who is on the autism spectrum, needed close supervision when playing outside. Toys were scattered throughout the three small bedrooms and the carpet, which covered the entire apartment, remained stubbornly dirty despite Liyu’s best efforts. Her dust mite allergy made cleaning it a daily battle, and no matter how hard she tried, it always appeared unclean. Looking around, Liyu thought about how desperately she wanted a home that would fit her family’s needs – somewhere safe and stable. It wasn’t long until Liyu decided that enough was enough. She began searching for a new place to live, but her excitement at the prospect of a new home quickly became disappointment. With her husband’s job based on commission, saving enough for a down payment on a home was impossible. With the little savings they had, it was difficult for Liyu to find a home that wasn’t old and run down, and she found herself continuously viewing apartments that were not much better than their current living conditions. In the end, Liyu was stuck in the rent cycle. It wasn’t until Liyu heard of Habitat’s affordable homeownership program that her luck began to change, and although her initial application was denied, her friends encouraged her not to give up and to apply again. Her second application was a success, and just seven days after applying, she was calling her husband to let him know the good news. To say every member of the family was excited to move into their home is an understatement. Liyu almost couldn’t believe her eyes at the size of the home, and her daughter was jumping around, unable to contain her excitement. Now, her oldest son is proud to have his own room and space that he can call his own, and Liyu sees him gaining confidence each day, regularly inviting his friends over after school to visit. Liyu has noticed that her daughter no longer spends all day watching TV, and instead spends her time downstairs reading books and making art. All the children enjoy their spacious backyard, where Liyu no longer needs to worry about their safety, and can supervise them from the kitchen window. For the entire family, there is now more room, and the family has separate spaces for the children to play, to store items, and to relax. Liyu is most proud of her clean house, which she is able to easily maintain, and can’t wait to start gardening next year. To Liyu, homeownership means peace of mind. Now, she is confident and secure, and she feels accomplished. She is eternally grateful for Habitat’s support and does not have enough words to express her gratitude. She encourages anyone interested in owning a home to apply today.
