Habitat for Humanity Edmonton celebrates World Habitat Day with Volunteer Gala

For Immediate ReleaseOctober 6, 2025 EDMONTON, ALBERTA – Habitat for Humanity Edmonton marked World Habitat Day by hosting a Volunteer Gala this evening at the Chateau Louis, celebrating the dedication of more than 150 volunteers whose time and energy drive Habitat’s work across the region. World Habitat Day, recognized by the United Nations every year on the first Monday of October, calls attention to the state of our towns and cities and to the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. The evening included speeches from community leaders, homeowners, and long-time volunteers, followed by an award ceremony honouring standout volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their service. “World Habitat Day is a reminder that the way we plan and build our cities directly affects the quality of life of its residents. Habitat for Humanity Edmonton is committed to building homeownership opportunities for hard-working Albertans and to supporting a strong and stable future in our province. We are profoundly grateful for their service and the lasting impact they have in our community — building homes, communities, and hope for generations to come.”– Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton A key highlight of the evening was the recognition of Servus Credit Union, the official sponsor of Habitat Edmonton’s volunteer program. Volunteerism is at the heart of that, and we are proud to partner with Habitat to empower volunteers who are making a meaningful difference in people’s lives and helping create safe, stable homes for families.”– Stephanie MacMillan, Business Development Manager, Servus Credit Union Also in attendance was Rakhi Pancholi, MLA for Edmonton-Whitemud, who shared remarks on the importance of community-driven efforts to strengthen neighbourhoods. “There is no better antidote to feelings of disconnection than to get out and volunteer. As a lifelong volunteer myself, I know how much purpose, joy, and satisfaction it brings. It’s why I am proud to join Habitat for Humanity Edmonton in celebrating their amazing volunteers. These volunteers understand that making our community a better place is a responsibility we all share, and I’m proud to celebrate them for that.” – Rakhi Pancholi, MLA for Edmonton-Whitemud Habitat homeowner Allison Asare, a single mother of two, spoke at the event, sharing her journey to homeownership and thanking the volunteers whose dedication made it possible. “You haven’t just changed my life and the lives of my children — you’ve shown us the power of a community that lifts each other up. That gift of hope is something we will carry with us forever.”– Allison Asare, Habitat homeowner Finally, the gala recognized longtime volunteer Reno Laseur, who received the King’s Coronation Medal earlier this year for his dedicated service to Habitat Edmonton. Habitat for Humanity Edmonton hosts Home Celebration Ceremony for completed Sherwood Park build

August 20, 2025 SHERWOOD PARK, ALBERTA – Habitat for Humanity Edmonton held a Home Celebration Ceremony in Sherwood Park today to mark the completion of three new homes built in partnership with Pacesetter Homes and Qualico Communities. The newly finished homes, located at 1581, 1585, and 1589 Sandstone Blvd, are part of a triplex development made possible through the collective support of municipal, provincial, and federal partners. Strathcona County supported the purchase of the land, while the Government of Alberta and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) contributed funding for each unit. Together, these contributions made the project possible. These homes also form part of a broader investment by the federal government. Through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy, the Government of Canada has committed $3 million towards Habitat Edmonton projects, including these homes. This funding includes a Black Families Funding investment of $1.5 million. Through the collaboration of Pacesetter Homes and Qualico Communities — two divisions of Qualico — the combined expertise of homebuilding and land development enabled the provision of a land-inclusive price for Habitat, supporting affordability. Additionally, Qualico provided a corporate donation in support of the construction project. “When a family opens the door to their Habitat home, they’re stepping into a future that’s finally within reach,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “These homes represent months of hard work, perseverance, and the power of partnership. We are incredibly grateful to our partners for making today possible.” “At Pacesetter Homes, we know a home is more than walls and a roof. It’s where families grow, dream, and build their futures. That’s why our partnership with Habitat for Humanity means so much to us,” said Dave Armstrong, Vice President for Pacesetter Homes Edmonton. “Together, we’re creating safe, high-quality homes that open the door for brighter tomorrows for families in our communities.” “Qualico has a long history of supporting Habitat for Humanity across Western Canada,” said Kraig Radtke, Vice President for Qualico Communities Edmonton. “This project shows how developers and builders can work together to create lasting change for families and Qualico Communities is proud to contribute to this legacy.” “Strathcona County is proud to support initiatives that strengthen our community,” said Mayor Rod Frank. “By investing in affordable homeownership, we’re helping families build equity, stability, and a brighter future while advancing our vision of becoming Canada’s most livable community.” “A neighbourhood is more than just houses; it’s the people, and their futures being built here,” said the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. “Our new Government is proud to have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to make this housing development happen. As of result of this collaborative effort, more families will now have a high-quality and affordable place to call home in Sherwood Park.” The Honourable Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, added: “Safe, stable housing is the foundation of strong families and strong communities. By supporting Habitat for Humanity, we’re investing in both. The Sherwood Park build shows what can be achieved when we work together to help more Albertans put down roots and a roof over their heads.” “For me, home is my paradise — a place where we can finally breathe,” said Christel Meukick, who along with her husband and four children is moving into one of the new Habitat homes in Sherwood Park. “It means my children can grow up knowing that their parents worked hard for something lasting, and that we can finally put down roots in a community of our own.” These homes are part of Habitat Edmonton’s continued efforts to make homeownership affordable and accessible across northern Alberta. Each Habitat homeowner purchases their home through a unique mortgage model: no cash down payment is required, and mortgage payments are based on just 50% of the home’s appraised fair market value. – 30 – Media inquiries, please contact: Afarin MirzadehManager, Marketing & CommunicationsHabitat for Humanity Edmonton communications@hfh.org604-363-4077 About Habitat for Humanity Edmonton Habitat for Humanity Edmonton builds homes, communities, and hope through affordable homeownership. Lieutenant Governor honours Habitat Edmonton volunteers with King Charles III’s Coronation Medal

EDMONTON, ALBERTA – In a heartfelt ceremony held today at Government House in Edmonton, three dedicated volunteers from Habitat for Humanity Edmonton were awarded the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal. Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, presented the medals in recognition of their exceptional volunteerism and lasting contributions to the community. The King’s Coronation Medal honours Canadians who have gone above and beyond in service to others. Reno Laseur, Geoff Baxter, and Ted McClung were selected as recipients by Habitat Edmonton in recognition of their outstanding dedication and impactful contributions to the organization. Their longstanding commitment and quiet leadership have made a profound difference in the lives of countless Albertans seeking safe and affordable homeownership. “True community lies in the connections that we have with our neighbours, and there is no better way to form those relationships than the act of volunteering,” said Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani. “The King Charles III Coronation Medals have been a way to raise the profile of Albertans who have devoted their time and talents to serving others and hopefully inspire others to follow in their footsteps. As His Majesty’s representative in Alberta, I offer my congratulations and deepest admiration to medal recipients for their volunteer efforts.” Reno Laseur, a fixture at the Sherwood Park ReStore, is known for his steadfast presence and selfless approach. “I am both honoured and humbled at the same time,” said Laseur. “I am passionate about our mission here at Habitat for Humanity and enjoy working with all the fine people that help make it happen.” Geoff Baxter has lent his talents to everything from ReStore operations to golf tournament planning, always with humility and drive. “Thank you and the Habitat team for this nomination… It is unexpected but such a greatly appreciated honour,” said Baxter. Ted McClung, a volunteer of over 20 years, has led build crews and supported ReStore South with skill and grace. “I feel very honoured to have been nominated by Habitat for Humanity to receive a King’s Coronation Medal,” said McClung. “Remember, I’m just a little old guy who fixes cupboards, builds beds, replaces legs on sofas, and assembles things! Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity has been a very satisfying second career for me. I’ve met so many great people at Habitat and truly enjoy their friendship.” Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton, shared her pride in the recipients: “Volunteers like Reno, Geoff, and Ted are essential to everything we do at Habitat Edmonton. New Habitat homeowners celebrated in St. Albert

ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA – Habitat for Humanity Edmonton welcomed new homeowners during a Home Celebration Ceremony held in St. Albert, marking the completion of four affordable homes built through a multi-partner collaboration. The homes were constructed in partnership with community developer Averton and brought to life through the combined support of all levels of government. The Government of Alberta contributed $100,000 per home, while the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) provided $125,000 per home — together totalling $900,000 in funding. The City of St. Albert also played a key role, contributing $100,000 to help make the project possible. “Alberta’s government has been pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity over the years, and this project is yet another example of the great work that they do,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “Habitat for Humanity is making a real difference by helping get homes built in our communities.” Averton served as the builder on the project, assisting in the development of the homes located in St. Albert’s Midtown community. “Every home represents improved living conditions and greater financial stability for the new homeowners,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “We appreciate the contributions from our government and community partners that helped make these homes a reality.” New homeowner Irene Abatangana spoke during the event, highlighting what the moment meant to her and her family. “I look around and see more than walls and windows,” said Abatangana. “I see the start of everything we’ve dreamed of. Most of all, this home gives us peace. It gives us stability. And it gives us the courage to look ahead.” St. Albert City Councillor Mike Killick attended the ceremony and noted the importance of partnerships in addressing housing needs. “We are proud to welcome these four families to St. Albert,” said Killick. “The City is pleased to support efforts that improve access to affordable housing and appreciates the collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, Averton, and both the provincial and federal governments.” Averton President and CEO Paul Lanni also shared remarks during the event. “Averton is pleased to support the development of these new homes,” said Lanni. “We value the opportunity to work alongside Habitat for Humanity Edmonton in helping more people establish roots in the Midtown community.” These homes are part of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton’s broader efforts to expand access to affordable homeownership across northern Alberta. The Government of Alberta has been a prominent supporter of Habitat’s program across the province since 2005 and has invested $400,000 in the build at Cold Lake. “All Albertans, from those living in our biggest cities to our smallest communities, deserve a safe and affordable place to call home,” said the Honourable Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “Alberta’s government is proud to support this project and I’d like to thank Habitat for Humanity for helping provide housing for those in-need in Cold Lake.” The City of Cold Lake had set aside lots to donate to Habitat and will bring the total to six Habitat homes in the community. “Cold Lake is happy to see the continued success of Habitat for Humanity in our community,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “Providing affordable housing along with the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes with homeownership builds a strong, inclusive foundation from which our community can continue to grow together without leaving people behind.” Occupants will be selected closer to the completion of the homes and must meet Habitat’s eligibility requirements, which includes an annual income between $45,000 and $75,000. “Alongside our partners and supporters, Habitat is addressing the need for affordable housing in Cold Lake,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President & CEO, Habitat Edmonton. “Building affordable housing requires substantial capital investment and strong collaboration to address the complex issues of housing affordability. This build is a perfect example of a collaborative approach that will lead to more innovative, sustainable and community centered solutions.”
Habitat for Humanity Edmonton welcomes municipal leaders to address affordable homeownership in the capital region while participating on a Habitat build

September 13, 2023 EDMONTON, ALBERTA. With World Habitat Day around the corner, municipal leaders from across the capital region convened to lend their hands framing a basement and to see firsthand how Habitat for Humanity Edmonton (Habitat) enacts sustainable and generational change for individuals, families, and communities. Through an affordable homeownership program, Habitat provides a way for families to move from renting to owning a home, empowering them to focus on other meaningful life goals instead of stable housing. Habitat relies on partnerships with municipalities, homebuilders, and developers to carry out their life-changing homeownership program. “With housing affordability being a pressing concern, municipal leaders have joined us to see how Habitat for Humanity addresses the issue through our homeownership program,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President and CEO of Habitat Edmonton. “The impact of affordable homeownership on families is both immediate and long-term. Through owning a home, parents are able to build equity and save funds, which sets up their children for a successful future.” Habitat operates a Buy Back program that allows Habitat to repurchase homes from homeowners. The homeowner receives their equity, and Habitat is then able to use the home to serve another family. As the result of the Buy Back program, Habitat has helped an additional 290 families access affordable homeownership. Habitat’s model is sustainable and empowers families to move from renting to eventually purchasing a home on the open market. Habitat has brought communities together to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership since 1991. To date, Habitat has constructed 369 homes in communities in the capital region – Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Devon, Stony Plain, Leduc, and Spruce Grove – and is open to building in other capital region communities in need of affordable homeownership. -30- About Habitat for Humanity Edmonton Habitat brings communities together to help families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. Habitat for Humanity and partners begin legacy build in memory of a volunteer with far-reaching global impact

June 01, 2023 EDMONTON, ALBERTA. Habitat for Humanity supporters gathered to celebrate the official start of the Orest Myckan Legacy Build, presented by the REALTORS® Community Foundation. The build is in memory of Habitat Edmonton volunteer Orest Myckan, who passed away in January of 2022. Orest left a strong legacy of volunteerism in Edmonton as well as the many developing countries in which he built Habitat homes for families. The land for the build was donated by Elfrida and Eugene McTague in Orest’s memory. When completed, the build will be a duplex serving two Edmonton families in need of affordable home ownership. Integral to the build is funding from the Government of Canada. Since 2019, the federal government has made a total funding commitment of $2,368,355 through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat Edmonton projects, including these homes. This funding commitment includes a Black Families Funding investment of $1,144,779. Black families, who are disproportionally left out of home ownership in Canada, will be the beneficiaries of the two homes. “Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. Thanks to today’s announcement and in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Edmonton, two new homes will be created for deserving families – homes they can proudly call their own,” said The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion. “Housing affordability and social housing have been a main focus for our government and we have delivered on this together with Habitat for Humanity,” said the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism, Associate Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre “With today’s investment, we are providing more safe and affordable homes to Canadians, including in Edmonton. These investments will benefit families, businesses, and our community.” The REALTORS® Community Foundation has been a strong partner of Habitat Edmonton for over a decade and, as the lead supporter, has provided $200,000 towards the construction of the two homes. “The REALTORS® Community Foundation brings REALTORS® and industry stakeholders together to positively impact the communities they serve,” says Nicole Mackoway, Interim Executive Director, REALTORS® Community Foundation. “Our mission aligns with Habitat for Humanity, and the Orest Myckan build is something we are very proud to be a part of. There is also a lot of excitement from our REALTORS® membership, and many want to give their time to help bring these homes to reality.” The Government of Alberta has been a prominent supporter of Habitat’s program across the province since 2005, and has invested $200,000 in the Orest Myckan Legacy Build. Families for the homes will be selected closer to the completion dates of the homes and will need to meet Habitat’s eligibility requirements. “Habitat helps fulfill the needs of our community, and drives positive, generational changes for those who want to own a home yet don’t have the means to qualify for a traditional mortgage, said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President & CEO, Habitat Edmonton. “Families in our program move into affordable home ownership, then sell their home back to us when they are ready to move on. We then find another family to purchase the home. This is a proven cycle that transitions families from renting to affordable home ownership, and then to market home ownership.” – 30 – About Habitat for Humanity Edmonton Habitat brings communities together to help families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable home ownership.
