EDMONTON, ALBERTA. Habitat for Humanity Edmonton has built homes and served families in need of affordable homeownership for 30 years. With a strong legacy of serving families across northern Alberta, Habitat Edmonton has now helped over 750 families find the strength, stability, and independence that comes through affordable home ownership. The six home project in northern Edmonton is now completed, and the landscaping will commence later in the summer.

“We are elated each time a family signs their mortgage and moves into their Habitat home,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President and CEO, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “Habitat Homeownership allows parents to be optimistic about the future and to focus on their children instead of making ends meet from month to month. When families are ready to graduate from Habitat Homeownership, they sell their home back to us and use their equity to purchase a home on the open market. Their previous home then becomes a homeownership opportunity for another family.”

The Government of Alberta has been a strong proponent of affordable housing and Habitat homeownership in communities across the province. Their contribution of $600,000 of provincial grant funding towards the project in Hollick Kenyon has helped to ensure that local families will prosper.

“My sincere thanks go to Habitat for Humanity Edmonton for its dedication to providing homes for families in need and creating jobs for people in the region,” said Josephine Pon, Minister of Seniors and Housing. “These new homes in the Hollick Kenyon community of northeast Edmonton will make homeownership possible for four deserving families. Alberta’s government is proud to partner with housing providers and organizations such as Habitat for Humanity Edmonton to provide more affordable housing across the province.”

Habitat projects are only successful because of community support. The City of Edmonton has been an ardent supporter of Habitat projects since 1991 by helping the charity to acquire land and funding. The City of Edmonton made it possible for Habitat to acquire the land for the six homes constructed in Hollick Kenyon.

“At the City of Edmonton, affordable housing is one of our top priorities,” said Councillor Aaron Paquette, City of Edmonton. We are proud to have donated the land for the six single-family homes being celebrated today. A building project like the one at Hollick Kenyon gives us an opportunity to build an inclusive city where everyone can feel safe and have opportunities to thrive.”

Habitat Homeownership is open to families who are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents, have at least one child under the age of 18 residing at home, have a good credit score, and a household income between $35,000 and $65,000 per year. No cash down payment is required for the home. Homeowners gain access to market appreciation with no exposure to market depreciation, pay affordable monthly payments based on 50 percent of the value of the home, and are building equity with each payment.
