Inaugural Upcycle Challenge encourages reuse and creativity to support Habitat for Humanity Edmonton

Reimagine > Refresh > Renew > ReStore

Edmonton, AB – Habitat for Humanity Edmonton is partnering with local DIYers to reuse and repurpose existing ReStore furniture and materials by turning them into something completely refreshed and unique.

From August 15 through October 16, Habitat Edmonton’s first-ever Upcycle Challenge will follow DIYers as they transform one piece of furniture into a new creation that will be auctioned off during the Edmonton Fall Home Show to raise funds for Habitat’s Buy Back program.

“Our Buy Back program gives existing Habitat homeowners the option to sell their homes back to Habitat once they are ready to use their equity in new ways,” said Amber Lachambre, VIP for Sustainability and Impact, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “Having these homes return to Habitat allows our organization to offer affordable housing options to new families who can start to build equity for the future. Think of it like reuse!”

In addition to helping families achieve home ownership, many Habitat volunteers have been creatively transforming and upcycling items to sell in Habitat ReStores for years. With just a little imagination and some elbow grease, old furniture and materials slated for the landfill can be transformed into something useful.

“Our ReStores have saved so much from ending up in landfills. We decided to host the upcycle challenge this year to highlight DIY and our local ReStores since we weren’t hosting our regular summer build projects,” said Lachambre. “Also, after seeing other Habitat organizations host successful challenges of their own, we wanted to bring the same fun and creativity to our supporters here in Edmonton.”

Edmontonians and other DIY enthusiasts are encouraged to follow along on Habitat’s social media channels to learn tips and tricks and to vote for their favourite project to help crown the “2022 People’s Choice Award”. Final projects will be available to view and open for bidding during Habitat’s silent auction at the Edmonton Home Show from October 14-16, 2022. All proceeds will support Habitat’s mission.
