SPRUCE GROVE, ALBERTA. Two families in Spruce Grove are now homeowners thanks to Habitat for Humanity, their partners, and volunteers. The duplex home will serve two families immediately and, when families sell their home back to Habitat in order to pursue market homeownership, even more families will benefit from the homes years down the road. Habitat provides the opportunity for organizations to partner in being change-agents through affordable homeownership, and is grateful to the generous organizations and individuals who donated and the dedicated volunteers who helped on the build site and in other important areas such as ReStore, Habitat’s social enterprise.
“We’re proud of our new homeowners in Spruce Grove; they worked hard to take this giant step into homeownership,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. “Taking ownership of a home empowers our homeowners to bring positive change and stability to their family.”
Through the National Housing Strategy, the Government of Canada has invested $130,000 into these homes in Spruce Grove, bringing Habitat for Humanity one-step closer to creating 414 new affordable homes across Canada.
“Housing is more than just shelter, but a feeling of security, predictability, and comfort for Canadian families and individuals,” said the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance. “Partnering with local communities and not-for-profits helps our government’s National Housing Strategy to deliver results that fit the needs of Spruce Grove residents. This will directly translate into Albertans taking their first step to build social equity and become homeowners.”
The Government of Alberta’s has contributed $200,000 of provincial grant funding towards the project in Spruce Grove has demonstrated their commitment to supporting affordable housing across the province.
“This project is another example of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to working with our community partners to find innovative ways to find the right housing for the right people,” said the Honourable Josephine Pon, Minister of Seniors and Housing. “Today, two hard working families achieve their dream of homeownership and I welcome them to their new homes where they can set new roots for their family.”
Habitat projects are only successful because of community support. The City of Spruce Grove has supported a number of Habitat projects in the community, and we are grateful for their support of affordable homeownership in the community.
“It’s been a privilege to partner with both Habitat for Humanity and Cantiro Homes on this 30th anniversary build,” said Spruce Grove Mayor Jeff Acker. “Thank you for the work you do to provide affordable housing options to local families, and we are looking forward to welcoming these families to our community and showing them the many reasons why Spruce Grove is a great place to call home.”
Habitat Home Ownership is open to Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents who have a good credit score and an annual household income between $35,000 and $65,000. No cash down payment is required for the home. Homeowners gain access to capped market appreciation with no exposure to market depreciation, pay affordable monthly payments based on 50 percent of the value of the home, and are building equity with each payment.
