Mahesh’s Story

Mahesh Hettiarachchige and Family in their Habitat for Humanity Edmonton home

In 2023, Mahesh, his wife, and their three children packed up their lives in Sri Lanka and set their sights on Canada. Like so many families who leave everything familiar behind, they came with hope in their hearts and a dream of building a brighter future together.

Those first months weren’t easy. They rented apartments and townhouses, adjusting to the rules, requests, and the reality of neighbours separated only by a wall. Privacy was hard to come by, and freedom even harder.

“This was especially challenging for my eldest son,” Mahesh shared. “He is non-verbal and autistic. Sometimes he screams, has meltdowns, or throws tantrums, and the noise led to complaints from landlords. And of course, it’s nearly impossible to keep young children quiet at all times. Our kids love to be outside, exploring, laughing, just being children.”

Despite the obstacles, the family never lost sight of their goal: a home of their own.

“We dreamed of a backyard where the kids could play freely, without worry – where they could simply be themselves.”

That dream felt within reach when they discovered Habitat’s homeownership program. No down payment was required, and the process was simple enough to give them hope. With determination, they filled out the online application, submitting details about their family, proof of income, and the necessary documents.

Through it all, Roxanne – Habitat’s staff member and their guiding hand – was there with patience and warmth. She answered questions, helped gather what was needed, and ensured the family never felt alone in the process.

The day their approval came through was unforgettable. “Words truly cannot describe how happy we were,” Mahesh recalled. “The kids actually danced when they heard the news – especially when they learned the house would have a backyard.”

Soon, Roxanne shared even more wonderful news: a home in Riverdale would be ready for them by May 2025. When the family stepped through its doors for the first time, their hearts knew. This was it – the place they had been imagining all along.

The house had everything they had hoped for: four bedrooms, two bathrooms, space to grow, and – most importantly – a huge backyard that promised adventure, laughter, and freedom for the children. For Mahesh and his wife, it also promised something priceless: stability, privacy, and security.

The family is eager to take part in Habitat’s Volunteer Program too, seeing it as their chance to give back, to be part of the same circle of kindness that helped them find their home. As Mahesh reflected, his voice carried both gratitude and joy: “Home is more than walls and a roof. It is the place where our family can grow in safety and comfort, surrounded by love and belonging. This home stands as a testament to what is possible when people come together. We are forever grateful to Habitat for making this dream a reality.”
