Honouring the legacy of President Jimmy Carter (1924 – 2024)

We are mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a man whose legacy of public service, unwavering commitment to human rights, and enduring compassion for those less fortunate have inspired generations. His life’s work stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the impact one person can have in changing the world for the better. On behalf of our staff, volunteers, and the countless families touched by his work, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family.

The 2017 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project

In 2017, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton was honoured to host Habitat for Humanity’s 34th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. This monumental event brought together thousands of volunteers from across the globe, including President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, to help build affordable homes alongside future Habitat homeowners.

The incredible collaboration resulted in the construction of 58 Habitat homes in Edmonton — now known as Carter Place — 16 homes in Fort Saskatchewan, and the donation of 1 home. Carter Place has since grown into a thriving neighbourhood, serving families and individuals with strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. This community also continues to embody President Carter’s vision through Habitat Edmonton’s BuyBack Program, ensuring homes remain accessible to future generations.

President Carter’s hands-on approach during the 2017 build — despite his advanced age — was a testament to his lifelong commitment to making a difference. His presence on the build site were both humbling and inspiring, reminding us all of the power of collective action.

Memorial Doors: A Tribute to President Carter’s Legacy

As we join Habitat for Humanity organizations worldwide in mourning this profound loss, we are also celebrating President Carter’s incredible legacy. To honour his memory and acknowledge the doors he opened to brighter futures for thousands of Habitat homeowners, Habitat Edmonton is proud to participate in a global tribute.

We are erecting four memorial doors, symbolizing the opportunities President Carter created through his nearly four decades of advocacy for affordable housing. These doors will be displayed at each of our four Edmonton area ReStore locations:

  • ReStore North: 8210 Yellowhead Trail NW, Edmonton
  • ReStore South: 4004 99 Street NW, Edmonton
  • ReStore West: 16811 106 Avenue NW, Edmonton
  • ReStore Sherwood Park: 7 Streambank Ave, Sherwood Park

The media and general public are invited to visit any of these locations to pay tribute to President Carter by signing the memorial doors with their names and personal messages. These doors will serve as enduring symbols of his vision, proudly displayed in our ReStores as a reminder of the countless lives transformed by his work.
