ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA. Habitat for Humanity supporters gathered to celebrate the official start of a build in St. Albert. This project will result in four homes for those in need of affordable homeownership in the community of Midtown. The homes will be constructed by Averton, and the built is a partnership between Habitat Edmonton, the Province of Alberta, the City of St. Albert, and Averton.

Since 2005, the Government of Alberta has been a prominent supporter of Habitat’s program across the province and have invested $400,000 into the St. Albert build.

“I want to extend my congratulations to Habitat for Humanity for their Midtown Kick Off in St. Albert,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “With four new affordable homes, Habitat for Humanity is making home ownership a possibility for more Albertans.  This is another project which exemplifies how strong partnerships between governments, the non-profit and private sectors can improve and expand affordable housing for Albertans.”

The City of St. Albert has also provided funding for this project. Their support will provide four families in St. Albert’s Midtown community with the opportunity to own a home.

“St. Albert City Council is committed to supporting community well-being, with more housing choices available for our residents,” said Mayor Cathy Heron. “Regardless of your age, family situation or income, we want to provide everyone with the ability to access housing and experience the exceptional quality of life our community offers.”

The construction of the homes will be through Averton, who will complete the affordable homes in St. Albert’s Midtown community.

“Habitat for Humanity improves the lives of countless families by making the dream of home ownership possible. Averton is honoured to partner with such an important organization in our Midtown community,” said Paul Lanni, President of Averton. “Midtown has been recognized as Alberta’s Best New Community by blending distinct and high-quality architectural design, accessible natural amenities, and open spaces that prioritize socialization, diversity, and safety for our residents. By helping to introduce additional families into Midtown, Habitat for Humanity plays an important part in reinforcing these priorities.”

Applicants for the homes will be reviewed and selected closer to the completion of the homes. Occupants must meet Habitat’s eligibility requirements, which includes an annual income between $45,000 and $75,000.

“The need for affordable housing in our communities is more present now than ever,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Reddy, President & CEO, Habitat Edmonton. “Across our province, families and individuals are struggling to own a home. Addressing the need for affordable housing requires collaboration and support, and this build will bring communities and organizations together to build safe and stable homes, driving positive, generational change in St. Albert and across northern Alberta. “
