Habitat for Humanity Edmonton believes that home owners hip brings security, stability, and many other benefits. Habitat homes are built by volunteers and donors and sold to qualified families. Habitat holds the mortgage, charges no interest and amortizes the mortgage for as many years as necessary to ensure families pay no more than 25 percent of their income for housing. If you are a hard-working family who would like to own your own home, the Habitat program may be for you.
In keeping with our philosophy of providing a "hand up, not a hand out," we help families who meet the following criteria:
Need:
- Families must have children under age 18 living at home.
- Their current housing is substandard, does not meet their needs, or they would otherwise be unable to purchase a home.
- They must have been residents of Canada for three years and of the Edmonton area (or community where we are building the home) for one year.
- The Habitat program is intended for families who have not previously owned a home.
Ability to pay:
- Income between $32,000 and $54,000 annually in order to carry the interest free mortgage.
- At least one adult employed full-time year round.
- Good credit rating.
- Balance between debt and income.
- If a family has experienced bankruptcy, they must have been discharged for two years.
Willingness to partner:
- Families agree to work 500 hours at the build site in place of a cash down payment.
- They agree to keep home and yard in good condition.
- They agree to follow all Habitat for Humanity Edmonton policies.
If you think you fit our criteria, please call 780.479.3566 ext 223 for more information about how to apply.
NOTE: At this time we are placing families in Edmonton, Edson, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and St. Albert.
